The best 100 photos from Chicago Tribune photographers in 2023

Our annual hunt for the best Chicago Tribune photographs of the year is always enlightening yet agonizing. Many discussions over nuanced differences in composition and decisive moments while balancing the best photos with the biggest news of the year. With over 55,000 photographs submitted by the staff photographers, just editing to the top 100 for our online photo gallery is a labor of love. After much compromise the final edit is displayed on the pages of our pictures of the year magazine. — Todd Panagopoulos, director of content/visuals

With the rise of artificial intelligence in our daily lives, questions about what is real and what is not will be raised more often than in the past. It’s more important than ever that our readers have trust in the images they see in the Tribune. Every day, Tribune photographers fan out across the city and suburbs helping to tell important stories about the people in our communities and documenting events that shape our lives. And Tribune photo editors, who look at hundreds of photos each day from Chicago and beyond, are tasked with selecting those compelling and truthful images, which you’ll see in the pages of our magazine and online gallery. It’s an honor to work with an incredible photography staff here at the Tribune and we are very proud to present their best of the best to you. — Steven Rosenberg, senior content editor/visuals

When Tribune photo editors gather to evaluate tens of thousands of photos for this Photos of the Year special edition, I’m always amazed at how difficult it is to select such a small number. By this point, we’ve distilled countless images down to the subset that are published on the website and in Tribune print editions, so this annual selection is from the best of the best. Many, many photographs that show historic and dramatic moments, the peaks and valleys of human emotion and beautiful or amazing compositions don’t make the cut — a reminder of the skill level of our photojournalists. I’m proud to help curate the striking and storytelling images taken by our talented team. — Andrew Johnston, deputy senior content editor/visuals

To find the Tribune’s photos of the year, the visual editing staff combs through thousands of images from our 10 photographers. It’s a daunting yet exhilarating task to view a year in the life of our city and narrow it down to the photos you’ll see in this book and photo gallery. The variety and depth of the images is breathtaking. Some moments will be big — such as the action shot of a fish sailing through the air on our cover. Some moments will be small — such as the head of a dog peeking out from a hammock on a warm day on the lakefront. We hope you enjoy looking over the photos and we look forward to a new year of our photography staff capturing the big and small moments in our city. — Marianne Mather, deputy senior content editor/visuals
